Jobs for the Future
Jobs for the Future seeks to prepare all young people for the future. We help young people, particularly those poorly served by current educational and workforce development systems, make the transition from high school to higher education and career-track employment.

The task is nothing less than to create institutions for learning that extend to all the quality of academic and skills preparation traditionally reserved for the college-bound. In our view, education must incorporate rigorous academic programs effectively delivered to all students, teaching and learning that use real-world problems and community and workplace settings, and an end to distinctions between the path to college and the path to employment.

Jobs for the Future believes that effective learning rests upon connections-among schools, employers, and postsecondary educational institutions. These linkages can improve young people's academic and career options and lead to successful, lifelong transitions between learning and work.

It also helps communities share information and increase public awareness and support for effective approaches to crime prevention.

National Fraud Information Center (NFIC)
The NFIC was originally established in 1992 by the National Consumers League (NCL), the oldest nonprofit consumer organization in the United States, to fight the growing menace of telemarketing fraud by improving prevention and enforcement. For more information about NCL and the other projects and programs that it conducts, please go to the NCL web site.

The NFIC is the only nationwide toll-free hotline for consumers to get advice about telephone solicitations and report possible telemarketing fraud to law enforcement agencies. In 1996, the Internet Fraud Watch was created, enabling the NFIC to offer consumers advice about promotions in cyberspace and route reports of suspected online and Internet fraud to the appropriate government agencies.

Consumers can call the NFIC hotline toll-free at 1-800-876-7060 or send their questions to the NFIC via this web site. The NFIC's trained counselors help consumers identify the danger signs of possible fraud and direct them to the right places for more information, if needed. Consumers can also report suspected telemarketing or Internet fraud through the NFIC hotline or web site. These reports are relayed to a variety of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, alerting them to problems that they may wish to investigate and providing them with the ammunition they need to stop fraud. The NFIC's counseling and consumer reporting services are available in English and Spanish, free of charge.

The NFIC's award-winning web site not only enables consumers to get answers to their questions and report possible fraud, but it is a valuable educational tool. Check out the News & Views section, the Internet Fraud Watch section, the telemarketing tips, the special elder fraud information, and other features.

Safe Surf
We believe that standards must be implemented in cyberspace. Children should be protected on the Internet, however parents should have the choice to raise children as they see fit and define the word "indecent" for themselves. The online community is made up of many diverse cultures from around the world. Obviously, opinions will differ on levels of acceptable material. Parental choice is really the only answer to this problem. The only way we will be able to achieve freedom of choice by parents is to implement an Internet-wide rating standard.

SafeSurf has recently launched the SafeSurf Internet Filtering Solution for schools, libraries, ISP's and corporations. Our solution is a server solution, which means that the software is not installed at the end user's computer, but at the ISP level to avoid tampering. In addition SafeSurf offers its assistance to help all of the filtering software companies produce better products and encourages them to support the SafeSurf Rating Standard.

Spam Patrol
The use of Internet email services for private advertising is on the increase. The popularity and novelty of the Internet, like the glamour of the Old West, is attracting hucksters, hustlers and entrepreneurs of all sorts with the prospect of fast and easy money.

Like their counterparts in the Old West, these Internet newcomers understand very little about the real nature of the environment they seek to exploit. Like fishermen equipped only with sticks of dynamite, they accumulate ever larger lists of email addresses with which to flood the email services with advertising for products and services which few, if any people want. In the process of scattering these ill-conceived floods of digital garbage, they routinely appropriate domain names, mail relays, user identities and other resources which are not theirs, leaving a wake of angry users and angrier system admins behind them.

Think spam is a good way to advertise? Think again!

Please read this article by Linda Formichelli. You can get cheated or sued for using spam, and at very least you will find, as many others have, that advertising using unsolicited commercial email (UCE) is far from cost effective. The only people making money from spam are the people selling spamming software and email address lists. They don't care about their reputations!

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an independent federal regulatory agency that was created in 1972 by Congress in the Consumer Product Safety Act. In that law, Congress directed the Commission to "protect the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products."

We have jurisdiction over about 15,000 types of consumer products, from automatic-drip coffee makers to toys to lawn mowers. Some types of products, however, are covered by other federal agencies. For example, cars, trucks and motorcycles are covered by the Department of Transportation; foods, drugs and cosmetics are covered by the Food and Drug Administration; and alcohol, tobacco and firearms are within the jurisdiction of the Department of the Treasury.

U.S. Postal Inspection Service Policy re: Chain Letters
A chain letter is a "get rich quick" scheme that promises that your mail box will soon be stuffed full of cash if you decide to participate. You're told you can make thousands of dollars every month if you follow the detailed instructions in the letter.

A typical chain letter includes names and addresses of several individuals whom you may or may not know. You are instructed to send a certain amount of money--usually $5--to the person at the top of the list, and then eliminate that name and add yours to the bottom. You are then instructed to mail copies of the letter to a few more individuals who will hopefully repeat the entire process. The letter promises that if they follow the same procedure, your name will gradually move to the top of the list and you'll receive money -- lots of it.

There's at least one problem with chain letters. They're illegal if they request money or other items of value and promise a substantial return to the participants.

Virtuocity Family Friendly Sites™
Freedom of speech is an extremely important right of all citizens. However, all citizens also have a right to live without being molested verbally, visually, emotionally or physically. While some proponents of absolute and total freedom of speech place that right above seemingly all other citizen rights, we are not here to make judgment on that opinion. In fact, we understand the reasons why many feel so strongly about freedom of speech in light of abuses by many past and present governments. The purpose of this site is simply to offer a clear indication via FFS emblems of places on the Internet that voluntarily abide by guidelines of conduct as outlined below.
