2Take10 (Smoking prevention)

Think your son or daughter is too young to consider trying a cigarette? Think again. Chances are they'll be asked by friends to try smoking not once, but repeatedly. So, like all parents, if you want your children to make the right decisions, it's best to start talking to them about how you'd feel if they did try a cigarette.

The suggestions in this Web site are just the beginning. The important thing is to talk to your children early on and make your point-of-view clear before they try a cigarette. "Take 10" provides tips for opening a dialogue with your child. Select a button from the left and learn more.

Discovery Cove - Swim with Dolphins

Discovery Cove is the ultimate tropical paradise where you do it all - all in one place.
Swimming with dolphins is the centerpiece of a daylong adventure at Discovery Cove, located adjacent to SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida. Interacting with a bottlenose dolphin is just one of the several experiences in this exotic tropical oasis that will stay with you for a lifetime.

At Discovery Cove you will snorkel through colorful reefs teeming with thousands of tropical fish, explore underwater shipwrecks and mysterious grottos, and lazily swim down a tropical river with rocky waterfalls and a freshwater lagoon. Snorkelers glide among stingrays - surprisingly gentle creatures that don't really sting at all, but do grow up to 4 feet in diameter - and stare down dangerous sharks and barracuda - as you safely swim within inches.

Swimming under a picturesque waterfall, you emerge from the pristine waters in a huge aviary towering over both water and land. Here you can play with more than 200 tropical birds.

"With Discovery Cove, we're truly creating an extraordinary family adventure and giving guests an all-new reason to come to Orlando," says Frank Murru , Discovery Cove's general manager. "After the opening of Discovery Cove, vacations will never be the same."

To date, 16 children have died in cribs of similar faulty design. And portable cribs are just one of the myriad children's products that may prove to be dangerous.

Lego.com®

The LEGO Company founder Ole Kirk Christiansen invented the term LEGO in 1932. Born out of the two Danish words "LEg GOdt" meaning "play well" in English.

Nearly 70 years later, there are probably few children - or parents - in the world who have not at some point or another experienced the wonder of playing with LEGO products. The concept of "Play Well" continues to serve as the philosophy for all LEGO products today. A philosophy encouraging children to be open and curious. To stimulate their creativity, imagination and learning - while they're having fun.

Little Critter

"I began illustrating books in 1966. Since that time I have published over 300 books. Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid. Now I'm a big kid and I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always remind me of what it was like.

I was born in Arkansas in 1943. Boy, that was a long time ago! It's real fun to be an old kid. Then my parents moved to Hawaii when I was thirteen years old. After High School, I went to Honolulu Academy of Arts. Then I moved to New York City. Now I live in Connecticut. My wife, Gina, and I write the Little Critter stories together. We have four children. We have a dog named, Belle and a cat named Tickles."

Megan's Law

On May 17, 1996, President Clinton signed Megan's Law . Megan's Law goals include:

- Sex Offender Registration - Each state and the federal government are compelled to register individuals who have been convicted of sex crimes against children. Sex offender registration laws are necessary because: sex offenders pose a high risk of re-offending after release from custody; protecting the public from sex offenders is a primary governmental interest; the privacy interests of persons convicted of sex offenses are less important than the government’s interest in public safety, and release of certain information about sex offenders to public agencies and the general public will assist in protecting the public safety.

- Community Notification - Each state and the federal government are compelled to make private and personal information on convicted sex offenders available to the public. Community notification is based on the presumption that: it will assist law enforcement in investigations; establish legal grounds to hold known offenders; deter sex offenders from committing new offenses, and offer citizens information they can use to protect children from victimization.

The criteria for implementing Megan's Law are left up to the states as long as they follow certain specific guidelines which results in disparities among states. For instance, many states make information on registered offenders available on the Internet while some states barely make the information available at all.

National Center for Children & Youth Disabilities (NICHCY)

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC)

To date, NCMEC has worked on 66,350 cases, helped recover 47,284 children, and raised its recovery rate from 60 percent in the 1980s to 93 percent today. NCMEC’s increased success is a direct result of additional human resources; technological advancements; training workshops;  program development, research and evaluation; and aggressive private, public and community partnerships. Although NCMEC’s efforts and successes have grown over the past decade, its physical space has remained stagnant, prohibiting its potential to meet growing demands. With the new building, NCMEC will spend less on space and more on protecting children. In addition, it will increase national and international efforts in the areas of prevention, education, case management and analysis.

"The work being done by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is a testimony to the tremendous role technology can play in the recovery of missing and exploited children around the world," said Wang. "It is my hope that their efforts will serve as a model to the rest of the world, showing how technology can and should be used to address our most pressing social issues."

National Children's Coalition (NCC)

NATIONAL CHILDREN'S COALITION, sponsor of YOUTH AND CHILDREN RESOURCE NET on the World Wide Web, was started in Spring 1994 to be a central resource and referral center for information on issues and activities centered around American children and teens.

NCC was also established to advocate for a much more substantial and urgent effort to stem the growing crisis of our kids: the epidemic child abuse, the alarming suicide rate among our teens, violence directed at and even by children, AIDS, runaways, domestic violence and latchkey children and a lack of adequate activities and opportunities for youth, particularly in cities.

National Clearinghouse on Families and Youth (NCFY)

NCFY is the Family and Youth Services Bureau's (FYSB's) central resource on youth and family policy and practice.  FYSB is a Bureau within the Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF); Administration for Children and Families (ACF); U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

For more than two decades, FYSB and the youth service field have created a strong continuum of care for youth growing up in difficult circumstances.  More important, the Bureau and the field designed and promoted a youth development approach to working with all young people that remains the cornerstone of FYSB's work today.

The youth development approach suggests that helping all young people achieve their full potential is the best way to prevent them from becoming involved in risky behavior. Youth development strategies focus on giving young people the chance to exercise leadership, build skills, form relationships with caring adults, and help their communities.  Further, the youth development approach acknowledges both that youth are resources in rebuilding communities and that helping young people requires strengthening families and communities.

In November 1998, FYSB expanded its efforts to promote the youth development approach by awarding more than $1 million in State Youth Development Collaboration Projects. The grants will enable nine States to develop and support innovative youth development strategies.

NCFY set up this Web site to give you access to many of our resources quickly and easily.  On this site, you will find information on new youth- and family-related materials and initiatives, NCFY publications for downloading, and more.

PencilFlag.com

PencilFlag.com is a free site that began shortly after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

The  idea was simple - to create a memorial flag that could be accessible to everyone, one that could be downloaded from computers and attached to something everyone has - a pencil.

The response was overwhelming and mostly from schools and daycares.  It seemed that the "Remember" pencil flag was helping children cope with the events by utilizing their creativity and at the same time promoting discussion.

Since then the little "Remember" pencil flag has been all over the world and their website enjoys thousands of visitors each month.  They currently offer other pencil flags as well: "Fun Flags," "Holiday Flags," "Occasion Flags," and "Specialty Flags."  One of the most popular is “The Love Garden” pencil flag, created with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in mind.

Pocket Parent®

The Pocket Parent is coming soon to a bookshelf near you! The Pocket Parent, written by Gail Reichlin and Caroline Winkler, is scheduled to be published by Workman Publishing Co. in September.
It is instant relief for when your 2-year-old is on the floor of the toy store, pitching a fit. Or when brother and sister discover that they can't stand each other. Or when your son can't say no to video games. The Pocket Parent is, literally, a pocket-size book of tried-and-true advice, common sense, parental wisdom, and sanity.

Written by two professionals who've reared six children between them and made a career out of helping others with parenting issues, this handy book will be a lifesaver for every parent of a 2-to-5-year-old. It begins with an overall view of the Pocket Parent approach to discipline. Based on unconditional love but firm limits, and aimed at keeping the child's dignity and self-esteem intact, here are strategies that include "I" statements, modeling, family meetings, and "one word" requests.
Once the ground rules are set, the guide moves to an A-to-Z compendium of common problems. Just look it up-Anger, Bad Words, Biting, Chores, Doctor Visits, Fears at Night, Lying, Separation Anxiety-and find the "Sanity Savers" list of suggestions, easy-to-follow bullets, anecdotes, and more.
Stay tuned for more details about how to order this pocketful of wit and wisdom.

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF) develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school-age children to read.

Through a national grassroots network that is expected to exceed 360,000 community volunteers (parents, teachers, librarians, and others) by the end of this year, RIF programs will provide new, free books and other essential literacy resources to more than 5 million children and their families. RIF's highest priority is the nation's neediest children from infancy to age 11. Many of the children RIF serves have economic or learning needs that put them at risk of failing to achieve basic educational goals.

RIF serves children and families in every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. offshore territories in programs that operate in schools, libraries, community centers, child-care centers, Head Start and Even Start centers, hospitals, migrant worker camps, homeless shelters, and detention centers. Today, thanks to public-private partnerships, RIF is the nation's largest children's and family literacy organization.

By the end of 2000, RIF will have placed 200 million books in the hands and homes of America's children.

Safe Surf

We believe that standards must be implemented in cyberspace. Children should be protected on the Internet, however parents should have the choice to raise children as they see fit and define the word "indecent" for themselves. The online community is made up of many diverse cultures from around the world. Obviously, opinions will differ on levels of acceptable material. Parental choice is really the only answer to this problem. The only way we will be able to achieve freedom of choice by parents is to implement an Internet-wide rating standard.

SafeSurf has recently launched the SafeSurf Internet Filtering Solution for schools, libraries, ISP's and corporations. Our solution is a server solution, which means that the software is not installed at the end user's computer, but at the ISP level to avoid tampering. In addition SafeSurf offers its assistance to help all of the filtering software companies produce better products and encourages them to support the SafeSurf Rating Standard.

School Zone Publishing Co.

School Zone Publishing Company began as The School Zone Learning Center in 1972. The Learning Center was a retail teachers' supply outlet, specializing in sales to teachers, with two stores in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

About 1974, schools instituted changes in educational methods that affected the home and schools. Changes included introducing new teaching methods in math and English and eliminating workbooks provided on a shared basis for home use. With these changes, parents experienced difficulty finding educational material for use at home.

Local parents turned to the Learning Centers, requesting workbooks and other at-home teaching aids. In response, the Centers formulated six workbooks and printed 1,000 copies of each. The books sold out in six months. An expanded workbook series was developed and received equally enthusiastic acceptance.

School Zone Publishing Company was incorporated in 1979. A new line of workbooks had been written and illustrated by late 1979. In January 1980, the line was printed and School Zone began operations. Market response was extremely favorable. The product line has expanded yearly and currently includes almost two hundred educational products.

Time For Kids delivers three editions during the school year: The World Report edition is an eight-page magazine, and most of its readers are in grades 4-6. The four-page News Scoop edition is for younger readers, and the four-page Big Picture edition is especially for kindergarten and 1st graders who are learning to read. The World Report and News Scoop are weekly magazines that cover news and articles about interesting people, places, and kids just like you. The Big Picture comes out every two weeks in two editions -- one focuses on news events, while the other explores big topics like transportation, animals, and seasons.

You can't find any of these magazines on newsstands - your teacher can order them for your class or your parents can order them and have them mailed to you at home. Look for exciting special issues throughout the year, as well as posters, maps, mini-magazines and more!

ZuZu

ZuZu was once a real newspaper that existed in the world outside computers
from the spring of 1992 to the summer of 1995. It was published by Restless Youth Press, Inc. a non-profit organization dedicated to publishing original work by young authors and artists.

Born in New York City, ZuZu was filled with the images and words of kids of all ages from many different backgrounds. It also featured children's book writers and illustrators, profiles of adults engaged in a variety of interesting careers, and more stories that reflected what readers were interested in.

Every other month, ZuZu was distributed free-of-charge to schools, libraries, pizza parlors, theme parks around New York City and eventually around the world! Teachers, reporters, librarians and kids were wild about it! This little newspaper grew and grew, from 15,000 copies to 30,000. It sponsored film festivals, writing contests, puppet shows, and other events for kids. Then one day, unable to adapt to the world around it, ZuZu abruptly disappeared.

Until Now...As of September 1996, Zuzu has resurfaced on the worldwide web. Showcasing work previously published along with inviting new young people to contribute, ZuZu continues to be a forum for expression for those explorers who stumble upon it.
